Chateau Tirecul La Graviere, one of the best Monbazillac

Claudie and Bruno BILANCINI led the Château Tirecul La Gravière much higher than at the top of the Monbazillac appellation. Their vintage Madame, regarded as one of the best sweet wines in the world, cheerfully supports the comparison to the famous Sauternes Château d'Yquem (blindly to put this small family estate on the same level as the flagship LVMH portfolio!).
Robert Parker did not make a mistake by awarding him twice his maximum score of 100/100.

In 1992, the Bilancini couple took over "le cru de Tirecul", then in ruins. They spotted the enormous potential of this terroir, located on the best hillside of the region, ideally oriented to the north, sheltered from the wind, which allows the noble rot to develop better, in a perfectly homogeneous way.

After replanting and developing the vineyard, they now produce Bergerac and Monbazillac with their confidential 6.5 hectares, planted half muscadelle, 45% Semillon and 5% Sauvignon Blanc.

An important precision to understand the success of the vineyard, in particular due to the minimalist yields observed (less than 10hl / ha for sweet wines): the proportion of Muscadelle is abnormally high in Tirecul La Gravière. This very sensitive grape variety, difficult to work and low yields requires a demanding viticulture to produce quality. This is why all the work of the vine is very "haute couture" to the vineyard, especially the grape harvest which, besides being manual, is carried out almost grain by grain.

As with all the great terroir with sweet wines, morning mists favor the development of botrytis, this noble rot that develops on berries whose sugar concentration is considerable, with always that vivacity that makes it unique. A real sweet!

In 2009, the estate began its "natural" conversion towards the organic label and obtained certification in 2012

Why should you buy these Monbazillac?

Jeb Dunnuck, July 2017 : Chateau Tirecul la Graviere: Some of the World’s Greatest Sweet Wines. I tasted these wines [...], and I have to say, they’re unquestionably some of the most impressive sweet wines I’ve ever tasted.
