Domaine des Huards, among the best Cheverny ?
Jocelyne and Michel Gendrier produce great Loire wines at Domaine des Huards in Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny appellation. The white AOC Cheverny wines are made from a blend of Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The AOC Cheverny red wines are made from Pinot Noir and Gamay. The white wines of the Cour-Cheverny AOC come from a rare and fascinating local grape variety: Romorantin.
The estate was created in 1846 by Pierre Gendrier. Today Jocelyne and Michel Gendrier, 6th generation continue the family tradition of the domain of the Huards, with the help of their son Alexandre (7th generation) for several years. Located in Cour-Cheverny, between Loire and Sologne, and close to the castles of Cheverny and Chambord, the vineyard covers 38 hectares. It enjoys a semi-oceanic climate and is planted on clay-limestone soils.
The AOC Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny are young micro-appellations created 33 years ago. The AOC Cheverny covers an area of 574 ha in 25 municipalities in the Loir-et-Cher. The AOC Cour-Cheverny covers an area of 60 ha in 11 municipalities in the Loir-et-Cher.
Precursors in terms of respect for the environment, the Gendrier have been managing their vines in organic and biodynamic since 1998. The winemakers promote microbial life in the soil, in herbs, and do not use synthetic chemicals. In the cellar, fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts.
Romorantin grape variety, introduced by François 1er (he planted it around the Chateau de Romorantin), is the emblem of the estate. It produces fruity, mineral, aging white wines and is the pride of the estate. It is THE grape variety of the Cour-Cheverny appellation and it gives the wine notes of typical honey, without any heaviness or sweetness.
