Domaine Nicolas Perrault, Maranges and Santenay
Nicolas Perrault produces fine Burgundy wines with the Maranges Premier Cru and Santenay appellations, located on the Côte de Beaune.
This small family estate was taken over by Nicolas Perrault in 2012. On his 4 hectares of vineyards, he crafts structured, full-bodied wines from perfectly ripe grapes grown on the beautiful slopes (brown clay and marl soils) in the south of Santenay, at Dezize-lès-Maranges.
The winemaker practices a meticulous, eco-friendly approach to viticulture, close to organic, with no herbicides and biodynamic preparations. Harvesting is done by hand, followed by sorting on a selection table for only the best clusters. Vinifications are largely whole-cluster for the reds. The wines are aged in barrels in a naturally climate-controlled cellar thanks to a natural spring. The winery is a spacious Cistercian building from the 15th century.
Maranges can be seen as a transition between Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire. Its characteristics are very similar to those of the Santenay vineyards (Côte de Beaune), an appellation more rooted in viticultural tradition (official AOP since 1937). The Maranges AOP was created more recently (in 1988), and its slopes have the unique characteristic of not aligning with those of the nearby Côte de Beaune. However, they are geologically comparable.
