Chateau de Jonquieres, among the best in Terrasses du Larzac
Charlotte and Clement de Bearn manage Chateau de Jonquieres with passion and produce fine organic Languedoc wines in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation. The red wines are made from the Mediterranean varietals Carignan, Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre. Carignans were, for example, planted 80 years ago by Charlotte's great grandmother and give birth to high end wines! The whites are made from Chenin and Grenache Blanc grapes.
Located 40 km from Montpellier, in the heart of Jonquieres village (where Cal Demoura and Mas Jullien are also ...), the vineyard covers 8 hectares. It is conducted in organic farming. Chateau de Jonquieres has been in the same family for 900 years. This magnificent property (which is also a guest house) has been passed on from generation to generation since the 12th century. At the end of the 19th century, the wines received a distinction which increased their recognition in France and abroad: the silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
In 1975 Francois de Cabissole took over the castle, after his father and his uncle. He is joined by his wife Isabelle. They are among the first to have believed in the potential of the unique terroir of Terrasses du Larzac. Today, their daughter Charlotte and their son-in-law Clement de Bearn are at the helm.
The terroir of Chateau de Jonquieres vineyard is special and very beneficial for the wine: a well-draining soil composed of limestone scree, and a climate with large differences in temperature between day and night. These conditions allow wines to be produced with great freshness and very flattering aromas from a young age. The winegrowers are very careful to protect this rich soil, the land is plowed and grassed, the harvest is done by hand. In the cellar, they use indigenous yeasts, and the different grape varieties are first vinified separately and then blended.
The 32nd generation continues the family tradition brilliantly!
