The Grape Varieties and Terroirs of Corsica

Corsica has experienced a remarkable wine renaissance over the past few decades. Driven by a new generation of passionate winemakers, Corsican wines now rank among the most exciting and distinctive wines produced in France.

Corsican Wine Map

Between the Mediterranean Sea and rugged mountains, the Isle of Beauty enjoys an exceptional climate and a remarkable diversity of terroirs. Renowned appellations such as Patrimonio, Ajaccio, Figari, Sartène and Calvi produce wines of character that can rival some of the finest bottles from mainland France.

Corsica's Signature Grape Varieties

Vermentinu

The emblematic grape variety of Corsica's finest white wines, Vermentinu produces elegant and refined wines with notes of citrus fruit, white flowers and remarkable freshness. The best examples also offer excellent ageing potential.

Niellucciu

A close relative of Tuscany's Sangiovese, Niellucciu brings structure, depth and ageing capacity to Corsican wines. It forms the backbone of many of the island's finest red wines, particularly in Patrimonio and southern Corsica.

Sciaccarellu

More delicate and spicy in character, Sciaccarellu is prized for its aromatic elegance, peppery notes and freshness. It reaches some of its finest expressions on the granite soils of the Ajaccio appellation.

The Leading Wine Estates of Corsica

Our selection showcases some of the most renowned estates in Corsica, including Clos Canarelli in Figari, Domaine Sant Armettu in Sartène, Domaine Santamaria in Patrimonio, and Tarra di l'Apa in the Ajaccio appellation. These producers perfectly illustrate the remarkable qualitative renaissance of Corsican viticulture and the exceptional potential of the island's indigenous grape varieties.

From outstanding Vermentinu whites to elegant reds crafted from Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu, their wines are now regarded among the finest and most sought-after wines of Corsica.

A discreet 100% sciaccarellu from AOC Ajaccio discovered in 2026, we were won over by its quality/price ratio. The winemaker produces this wine primarily for their own enjoyment. Hence, a very accessible price for this quality. Let's hope it lasts!

A 100% vermentinu (known as rolle in Provence), from a parcel selection that highlights this terroir of typically Corsican granite sands. Romain Salasca, winemaker and beekeeper, perfectly manages to preserve the freshness of the vermentinu while emphasizing the structure, like any respectable Corsican wine :-)

A very lovely cuvée, this is the one that the winemaker considers to be the most emblematic of Sant Armettu. It comes from a skillful blend of two terroirs (Propriano and Tizzano) and two complementary local grape varieties, sciaccarellu and minustellu, with a hint of grenache (here we say "elegante"). A great achievement with a true personality.

Great Corsican wine with a very floral nose, which introduced us to the domaine and won over all the tasters, without any reservations, which is rare! This cuvée 100% Elegante (the Corsican name for grenache) comes from vines planted on the slopes of the Gulf of Propriano.

One of the very fine Patrimonio wines that is accessible and not (yet) at the peak of its notoriety, which is catching up to the most well-known names among the general public... very expensive, with inconsistent qualities, no doubt resting on their Napoleonic laurels :-) It is high time to discover some very fine Corsican wines at a fair price!

93/100 RVF. Derived from the local grape variety bianco gentile, this cuvée is unique and benefits from a clay-granite terroir that imparts an inimitable freshness and finesse to the wine. An amusing anomaly: this cuvée has no appellation. It is simply a "Vin de France" because this grape variety is not included in the defined Corsican appellations...

94/100 RVF. Yves Canarelli crafted this cuvée "CN" (initially for "Carcaghjolu Neru", now for "Costa Nera") solely from this indigenous grape variety that produces long-aging wines, concentrated and very fruity, with spicy notes.

94/100 RVF. The cuvée de prestige from the domaine, made from a parcel selection of 5 local grape varieties (the "burghese" or bourgeois of Sartène :-), vinified with precision and aged for almost 3 years in barrels! A very long aging potential in view, but great wines are always good to taste in their youth after decanting that reveals their complexity.

94/100 RVF. The cuvée of prestige from the domaine, made from a parcel selection of 3 local grape varieties (the "burghese" or bourgeois of Sartène :-), vinified with precision and aged for 2 years in barrels and on lees. A great white wine to "make an impression"... or to keep all to oneself, as you wish!

The famous cuvée made from a multitude of Corsican grape varieties with names that cannot deny their origins, vinified in clay amphorae and without sulfites. A very wise choice to achieve soft and fresh tannins. It is impossible not to claim the Canarelli signature on this cuvée, synonymous with finesse.
