Southern Rhône appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Ventoux, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Côtes du Rhône

Grenache, Mourvèdre and the Great Terroirs of Southern Rhône

The Southern Rhône, or Rhône Méridional, produces some of the most generous and sun-filled wines in France. From Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Gigondas, through Cairanne, Vacqueyras, Ventoux, Lirac and the Côtes du Rhône Villages, the region offers a wide diversity of terroirs and wine styles.

The great red wines of Southern Rhône are mainly based on blends of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, often completed by other Mediterranean grape varieties. They produce deep, spicy and generous wines capable of ageing when yields are controlled and vineyards are carefully farmed.

The white wines of Southern Rhône are made from grape varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Marsanne, Bourboulenc and Viognier. The best examples combine richness, freshness and aromatic complexity.

The Great Appellations of Southern Rhône

Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the flagship appellation of Southern Rhône. It covers more than 3,100 hectares around the village of the same name, whose ruined castle recalls the presence of the popes in Avignon during the 14th century.

The appellation allows thirteen grape varieties, although red wines are most often based on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The soils are highly varied, including limestone, sand, red clay and the famous rounded stones known as galets roulés. These terroirs produce powerful, complex and age-worthy wines.

Gigondas

Located at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Gigondas produces structured, deep and sun-filled red wines dominated by Grenache. The best estates craft wines capable of rivaling some great Châteauneuf-du-Pape while retaining a fresher, more mountain-influenced identity.

Cairanne

Now recognised as a Rhône cru, Cairanne produces generous, elegant and spicy red wines, along with a few characterful whites. The appellation is increasingly regarded as one of the most compelling terroirs of Southern Rhône.

Vacqueyras

Vacqueyras produces dense, structured red wines based mainly on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. More accessible than Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the appellation can offer excellent age-worthy wines when handled by demanding growers.

Ventoux

The Ventoux appellation, formerly known as Côtes du Ventoux, benefits from the influence of Mont Ventoux, which brings freshness and significant day-night temperature differences. Long underestimated, it now reveals excellent terroirs capable of producing balanced reds, expressive whites and characterful rosés.

Lirac and Côtes du Rhône Villages

Lirac and the Côtes du Rhône Villages complete the richness of Southern Rhône with expressive red, white and rosé wines. Some cuvées from villages such as Sablet and Séguret offer beautiful expressions of Grenache and Mediterranean terroirs.

The other "little" Côtes du Rhône from Stéphane Ogier, primarily Grenache to differ from the illustrious "Syrah d'Ogier". The quality-price ratio becomes indecent, but don't expect a light "little" Côtes du Rhône... This is truly a superb southern Rhône that can be kept for 5 years.

Barely tasted, we immediately selected it; it's impossible to overlook this little fruit bomb! Could it be the "ideal Côtes-du-Rhône" we have been searching for so long, with its impeccable quality and perfectly reasonable price? The 2025 vintage has just arrived. A delight!

96/100 RVF. A fine and vibrant vintage, considered by the Sabon family "as one of the best of the last decade", which reveals a beautiful aging potential for wines that will already be enjoyable in their prime youth (but may close up later, as sometimes happens with Châteauneuf-du-Pape).

94/100 J. Dunnuck. A complex Cairanne, with notes of spices, ripe fruits, leather, and flowers, highlighted by silky and fine tannins. Perhaps one of the most emblematic cuvées of the appellation. Best to keep in the cellar for some time, as it is still quite young upon its release from the domaine in October 2025.

Favorite and 98/100 RVF! The great cuvée from the domaine had not been produced in 2021 or 2022, and everyone was eagerly awaiting the 2023 vintage. Fortunately, all qualitative and weather conditions were met in 2023, marking the return of this mythical cuvée from Châteauneuf. Still closed and too young in June 2025, the date of its release from the...

93-94/100 RVF. It is the majority Grenache that captivates us in this magnificent Vacqueyras, a more rustic AOP in our memories, until the discovery of the talented Adrien Roustan. More elegance than armor, more 007 than Rambo, a Vacqueyras that will surprise enthusiasts!

Favorite and 98/100 RVF and B+D, 99+/100 Castaing/Parker. A great and classic Châteauneuf with long aging potential. Designated "Winemaker of the Year 2026" by the Revue du Vin de France, we are celebrating this with a 10% discount for a few days! Taste one of the greatest Châteauneuf-du-Pape there is!

A lovely Grenache vinified with the same care as their Grands Crus by the Brunier family in Châteauneuf du Pape, in the cellars of their illustrious Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. Be aware, 2022 is more robust than previous vintages and approaches more of a Châteauneuf than just a simple "quaffing wine"! For more enjoyment in 2024, prefer the superb...

The cuvée "classique" from the domaine in AOP Beaumes de Venise comes from an ideal terroir: The vines are located in Suzette (a high-altitude village bordering Gigondas by the Dentelles de Montmirail) on the Terres du Trias, the most emblematic terroir of the appellation!

A fine and vibrant vintage, considered by the Sabon family "as one of the best of the last decade", which reveals a beautiful aging potential for wines that will already be enjoyable in their prime youth (but may close up later, as sometimes happens with Châteauneuf-du-Pape). 93/100 RVF. The great cuvée from Adrien Roustan. The quintessential wine for aging from Gigondas. It comes from a high, south-facing parcel located at the summit of the AOP Gigondas. A lot of freshness and finesse brought by the altitude (520 m), and a beautiful complexity thanks to the 40-year-old vines. A very fine bottle that will rival the best...

Superb quality at an affordable price... In its youth, this cuvée with good aging potential and well-present tannins deserves to be aerated in a decanter, but its dominant wood/syrah gives it a very nice bouquet right from bottling, to blossom into smoothness in the following years. A safe bet from Ventoux. If possible, forget it in the cellar and prefer...

In our opinion, the best parcel of the domaine, with a diaeresis on the i (yes, it costs around €15, we are not in Côte-Rôtie :-). Yet, it is a wine crafted like a grand cru, with the same attention and "the same ingredients": old serines (the historic syrah from the north, the most renowned, with very concentrated small berries), combined with the white...

A very specific terroir (sand), a unique grape variety, old cinsault at 100%, which is gaining popularity for reds, whereas it was often reserved for rosés... Clos du Mont-Olivet is very much in tune with the times with this new cuvée that achieved great success from its first vintage (2018), thanks to the know-how of the Sabon family!

A very fine Ventoux, organic, full of fruit, in a very successful 2023 vintage, and at a reasonable price. The altitude plays a significant role! The winemaker describes it best: "Fresh, elegant, and fruity nose, with subtle floral notes. On the palate, it is indulgent with a beautiful structure and length."

The cuvée of prestige from the Domaine in AOP Ventoux. A "premium" Ventoux that revitalizes the appellation, much like its dynamic new winemaker, Matthieu Ponson. A constant pursuit of quality that is not found everywhere in Ventoux, where many winemakers are content to harvest grapes without ambition to sell them to large local négociants who market them...
