Stéphane Ogier, one of the finest winegrowers in Côte-Rôtie.

stephane-ogier-cote-rotie-rhoneThe Ogier family has been rooted for seven generations in the commune of Ampuis, the flagship village of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Ranked among the Top 100 producers of 2019 by Bettane et Desseauve.

In 1983, Michel Ogier began vinifying and bottling his wines himself rather than taking them to the cooperative cellar.

After successful studies in viticulture and oenology in Beaune, followed by highly formative internships with the finest Burgundy winegrowers, as well as abroad, Stéphane, the son, took over the family domaine in 1997.

Since then, a meteoric rise has propelled the domaine Stéphane Ogier d'Ampuis (not to be confused with a négociant of the same name, which has nothing to do with it!) among the elite of the northern Rhône, and not only in Cote Rotie. The Bettane et Desseauve Guide even compares it to Chave’s cult wines in Hermitage for the years to come.

Shaped by the omnipresence of terroir in Burgundian culture, and captivated by the elegance and finesse of Pinot Noir, the winegrower is convinced that his terroir and grape varieties (Syrah and Viognier) deserve the same classification: he therefore vinifies separately his Grandes cuvées (Cuvées Belle Hélène and Lancement), Premiers Crus (Réserve du Domaine), Villages (Cote Rotie Village, and at the same level L'Âme Sœur, made from the Syrahs of Seyssuel) and regional wines (La Rosine and other IGP wines).

Naturally, as with all great winegrowers, the wine is made first in the vineyard, with precise work on the soils, sometimes ploughed by horse; yet none of the finest cellar practices are overlooked, adapted to each terroir (notably partial destemming).

stephane-ogier-nouveau-chaiToday the domaine vinifies around fifteen different cuvées, each rarer than the last given the reputation earned thanks to the glowing reviews in Robert Parker’s publication, The Wine Advocate, widely read throughout the world. Renamed Domaine Stéphane Ogier following the construction in 2015 of a new winery worthy of the winegrower’s ambitions, a new era is beginning, perhaps the most challenging: after rising to superstar status, expectations are immense if such renown is to be maintained at the very highest level !

Why buy Stéphane Ogier wines?

Because we love them, and because we believe these wines fully deserve a place in your cellar! But as some customers have told us, "we are not objective, since we have tasted and chosen them in order to sell them: we have a vested interest". That is why we prefer to “defend” our selection with the comments of major guides, more objective than we are :

RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2026 2/4 (major benchmark domaine). Stéphane Ogier has complete mastery of his craft. Of the 18 hectares farmed by the domaine, 3.5 hectares are located on superb parcels in Côte-Rôtie. Stéphane joined his father Michel in 1997 after studying oenology in Beaune, where he developed a taste for elegance and finesse, which he expresses in his cuvées. The wines are made from partially destemmed grapes, depending on the cuvées, the terroirs and the profile of the fruit. Since 2014, he has had in Ampuis a winemaking facility worthy of his ambitions. The precision of recent vintages, the lighter use of oak, the rigour in the selection of parcel-based cuvées and the style the wines now display place the domaine among the elite. The price of the great cuvées is, alas, fairly high.

Guide Bettane et Desseauve: 4/5 (very high quality). The ambition displayed by Stéphane Ogier can be measured in the quality achieved by his wines, but also in his new vat room on the southern edge of Ampuis, a magnificent working tool for vinifying all his terroirs of Côte Rôtie and Seyssuel parcel by parcel. Barrel vinification is pronounced but controlled through long maturation periods, making this a reliable source of excellent northern Rhône Syrahs, as the great sommeliers and wine merchants around the world have already understood.

The other "little" Côtes du Rhône from Stéphane Ogier, primarily Grenache to differ from the illustrious "Syrah d'Ogier". The quality-price ratio becomes indecent, but don't expect a light "little" Côtes du Rhône... This is truly a superb southern Rhône that can be kept for 5 years.

Stéphane Ogier continues, despite his now immense international fame, to vinify his two "small" wines: "Le Temps est venu" (made from grenache) and this famous "Syrah d'Ogier". Be careful, this is not a "small wine" despite its price; it is aged in oak barrels and will keep for at least 3 or 4 years in a good cellar! We particularly enjoyed it in 2023.

A box set bringing together some of the most remarkable wines from these two appellations neighbouring the legendary Côte-Rôtie. We have chosen to offer Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage wines that are ‘accessible’ and ready to enjoy within the next 5 years, rather than prestige vintages intended for collectors who stockpile them by the case for decades...

La Rosine established the initial reputation of the domaine Stéphane Ogier. These old syrahs without appellation, adjacent to his Côte-Rôtie plots (and aged for 1 year in the same barrels), have greatly contributed to this! Be careful, this is not a "small wine"; it is a wine meant for aging (5 years).

This wine is impressive. The historic plot of the domaine Stéphane Ogier, although not located in the Condrieu appellation, is vinified as such and cared for throughout the year with the same attention... for lovers of exuberance and freshness, in complete simplicity, at a moderate price!

The Saint-Joseph from Stéphane Ogier is enjoying well-deserved success. Be careful, this is not a "small St Jo." Upon its release from the cellars of the domaine in 2025, it begins to open up but ideally deserves a bit more patience... if you don't give in before! A high-ranking cuvée.

94/100 RVF. The "curiosity" of Stéphane Ogier... According to him, perhaps better than a Côte-Rôtie... thanks to an exceptional terroir and exposure, while waiting for the official "Seyssuel" appellation. There was no Âme Soeur 2021 due to frost and hail, and our allocation for 2022 is unfortunately limited...
