JP and Benoit Droin, one of the best estate in Chablis
Droin family has been based in Chablis for more than 500 years. In 1923 Jean-Paul's great-grandfather, the current manager of the family vineyard (since 1983), was president of the "Union des Proprietaires Vignerons de Chablis"!
The vineyard now boasts 25 hectares of chardonnay, a majority of which are 1er crus and Grands crus. The responsibility for winemaking was delegated in 1999 by Jean-Paul Droin to his son Benoît, freshly graduated in oenology at the University of Dijon. Benoît represents the 14th generation of Droin.
The current terrain of the Chablis vineyard was excavated during the Ice Age, which succeeded the Jurassic and the secondary era, when the sea deposited its calcareous sediments composed of shells.
This geological stratum is called "Kimmeridgian soil": its composition has the same characteristics as that of Kimmeridge, in southern England. It is this terroir so unique, not found elsewhere, which confers their unique mineral character to the great wines of Chablis.
The "Domaine Droin", history obligatory, has always had the opportunity to develop on the best terroirs, and benefits each generation of a transmission of knowledge and know-how incomparable. This can benefit from the age of the vineyard and technical advances (for example, by purchasing a pneumatic press since 1999!).
Nowadays with an admirable simplicity (which does not prevent the extreme quality!), The vineyard is at the top of the hierarchy, only Chablis rated 3 stars with the families Dauvissat and Raveneau.
