Joseph de Maistre at Prieuré Saint-Céols and Domaine de Reuilly, organic and biodynamic

marie-joseph-de-maistre-vigneron-loire-reuillyThe domaine de Reuilly and the Prieuré de Saint-Céols were taken over a few years ago by winemaker Joseph de Maistre, who produces organic white and red wines in the Reuilly and Menetou Salon AOPs respectively, using Sauvignon and Pinot Noir grapes.

Denis Jamain produced great biodynamic Loire wines (certified organic since 2007 and some biodynamic plots since 2011) in the Reuilly appellation at the Reuilly estate. Located in Berry, the vineyard covers 21 hectares: 12 hectares planted with Sauvignon Blanc, 5 hectares with Pinot Noir and 4 hectares with Pinot Gris. From 2021 to 2025, he will be working alongside the new owner to pass on all his secrets!

At the Reuilly domaine, the vines are mainly planted on Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soil. This rich soil gives the wines great minerality. The south-southwest facing slopes enjoy plenty of sunshine and allow for early harvesting. The ‘Les Chênes’ vintages are aged in barrels made from oak from the family forest of the former owner, Denis Jamain. On 24 hectares, the Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grape varieties produce the estate's white, red and grey (or rosé, to simplify) wines respectively.

At the Prieuré de Saint-Céols, in the Menetou-Salon AOP, the 12 hectares of Sauvignon (white wine) and Pinot Noir (red wine) are also cultivated organically. The terroir is mainly composed of limestone sediments from the Mesozoic era (Upper Jurassic), rich in shellfish. The estate was acquired from Pierre Jacolin, who also gradually passed on his expertise to Joseph and Marie de Maistre.
