Clos Venturi – Emmanuel Venturi – Corsica

manu-venturi-clos-venturi.jpg

After a few years of studying law and business on the mainland, Emmanuel Venturi joined his father Jean-Marc, who had taken over the Vico estate in 1987. His return to his native land enabled the realization of a new project: the creation of a second estate from an isolated vineyard: Clos Venturi.

Clos Venturi is 28 hectares lost in a valley that has remained wild and completely preserved, located in the commune of Piedigriggio. The main asset of Clos Venturi is this hill of ancient sandstone (Miocene) resting on more recent magmas, 100 million years old (just a trifle :-).

The altitude of the vineyards averages 400 meters, but the surrounding peaks rise above 2,000 meters, which greatly influences the microclimate of Clos Venturi: an ideal balance of continental freshness and southern ripeness.

The vines include traditional grape varieties such as sciaccarellu or bianco gentile, as well as many other indigenous varieties, some of which are ancient or even completely forgotten. The winemakers take particular care of them because they cherish their heritage as much as the apple of their eye!

Clos Venturi is managed with respect for nature: certified HQE (High Environmental Quality) in 2016, it has long practiced organic farming (certified in 2017) and biodynamics (certification expected in 2023) to express its exceptional terroir and climate. In addition to viticulture, the Venturi family also raises bees, sheep, and chickens in this unique valley to maintain its natural harmony. This approach reflects both an environmental commitment and, above all, a qualitative pledge to let nature give its best.

We love the winemaker's "creed," so respectful of family, nature, Corsica, and the planet: "My father has taken a step back from the day-to-day; he offers advice, criticism, or praise with constant kindness. I am now the guardian of the identity of our estates [Vico and Clos Venturi, editor's note], geographically close yet very different in essence. My philosophy is the same everywhere: High Environmental Value, organic farming, biodynamic farming, permaculture, animal husbandry, beekeeping...

I made these choices to preserve my island, my terroir, the people who live here, and, more globally, the planet. I am convinced that our activity must become positive for our environment; this harmony will allow us to produce wines full of life and balance.

I am not an idealist or an esoteric dogmatist; I am simply a farmer in love with life, and every day I work to observe, understand, and support this alchemy to honor it.

This makes me and my wines, if not better, at least coherent with what we are and what our land expresses."

Why buy wines from this estate?

Because we love them and believe they have their rightful place in your cellar! However, as some clients have pointed out, "we are not objective since we tasted and chose them to sell: we are biased." That’s why we prefer to "defend" our selection with comments from major guides, which are more objective than we are:

RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2025: 3★/4: "In Ponte Leccia, an altitude village, Clos Venturi is a biodynamic farm revolving around animals and plants, with 40 hectares of land, 24 hectares of vines, 300 hens, and 80 sheep roaming freely. (...) Parcel selection, replanting of 19 native grape varieties, indigenous yeasts, and Demeter certification in 2020. The winery is remarkably equipped (barrels, tanks, and concrete eggs). The impeccable quality, continuous improvement of the range, and a collective tasting committee earned the third star this year."

Bettane + Desseauve Guide 2024: 4★/5. "Manu Venturi embodies Corsican viticulture at its most visionary. After converting the vines to biodynamics, introducing animal life, and mastering cover cropping, he maintains numerous plots where ancient grape varieties are being revived, expanding his range with new vintages. He follows a bold aging policy, releasing wines that are ready to enjoy."
