Jean Michel Gerin, one of the best winemakers in Cote Rotie
Jean Michel Gerin comes from a winemakers' family, who has lived for 6 generations in Ampuis, the "capital city" of Cote Rotie. He took over the family estate in 1983 to create his own. Since then, thanks to his talent, his estate has raised in quality to become one of the symbols of what is best in the region. The king grape varieties are Syrah (Cote Rotie, Saint Joseph) and viognier (Condrieu).
Today, Jean Michel Gerin manages - with the help of his two sons Michael and Alexis - 12 hectares of Cote Rotie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph, and PGI "Collines Rhodaniennes".
Renowned worldwide, his Cote Rotie single vineyards are very famous: "Les Grandes Places", "La Landonne" and "La Vialliere". They symbolize the winemaker's philosophy: respect for the terroir and its diversity. Each of its different terroirs in Cote Rotie is illustrated by a cuvee. He also produced more affordable blends in the different appellations, starting with simple PGI made with syrah (La Champine) or Viognier which can easily compete with AOC from many winemakers!
Vintage after vintage, the Gerin offer very classic and made for ageing wines, carried out by applying the most qualitative methods throughout the year, in both vineyards (manual work) and in cellars: Sorting, rigorous scratching, use of indigenous yeasts (present on berries), always with this deep respect for the typicity of each terroir. The oak barrels, sometimes exaggerated in the past, are now perfectly mastered.
