Alquier's 2009 Faugeres Les Bastides smells of cooked dark cherry, veal stock, lily and heliotrope. Rounded, broad, and rich, with its evident tannins finer and better-integrated (despite the share of new wood) than those of the corresponding Maison Jaune cuvee, this retains a welcome measure of bright fresh berry juice to help enliven its finish, just as the persistence of veal stock richness encourages the salivary glands. Even without allowing for the possible rebound this will experience from recent filtration and bottling, it ought to drink impressively for the better part of a decade, although I do not envision it as a very long keeper by estate standards.
